Charging the gate.... Empty Charging the gate....

Post by Jamesp Thu May 06, 2010 6:59 pm

We have created an invisible line that Max knows not to cross and to stop him charging the gate when people, kids or dogs go past, especially these days for safety reasons as well as people steal dogs from gardens, 95% of the time this works fine with a short sharp noise, however if we get the timing wrong or are focusing on something else then it doesn't work or as today about 30 screaming school kids went past the gate which was all too much for him, what I do there is put him on a long training lead as you will see, this helps reinforce the situation and just with it on him and not holding the lead is enough for him to get the message and then as you will see we remove the lead, if he was to try and run to the gate all we would have to do is step on the lead to stop him as we did in the beginning...

As we have just started spending time in the garden again after the winter I find it takes a few days to re-assert the rules about charging the gate and then the rest of the summer he won't charge the gate....

Then later on with the training lead removed.....

This video shows you him when the exercise has been complete, it took about 30 mins in total, you will now notice he watches some people go past the gate rather than charging the gate.....
