Another example of how the law in this country is a complete....ass....

Although it would appear they left the puppy unsupervised in the garden which is not a good idea with any dog these days....

I thought if you bought a stolen car 'in good faith' it was hard luck and if it was discovered you would lose your money. Seems it does not apply to pets.
Although the family only had the puppy for 3 weeks and the new owner for 6 months so it would have bonded more with the new owners. Difficult...I think if i was the new owner I would at least give the original family some/all of the cost of the dog back.
