Males having a 'season'?
Has anyone noticed male dogs having a season? It is well documented in wolves, I have noticed it in wolfdogs but don't remember it with ordinary dogs?

Re: Males having a 'season'?
Wolves have a narrow breeding season, approximately from January to March which varies slightly depending on how far north they are etc. Females only come into season once a year. Male wolves tend to only be fertile during this period and therefore also have a season, which can affect their mood as well as other bits!
I have noticed my male wolfdog seems to have this, seemingly starting some weeks before the female comes into season but I do not remember this happening with other dogs I had in the past.

Re: Males having a 'season'?
That is very interesting, one of my girls comes into season about every 9 months or so and the other one every 7 months, although they were nearly 18 months before they had their first one. I have had a couple of males in the past, to be honest I prefer females and haven't noticed anything untowards, but it does make sense really, if the females only have a season once a year, then rather than be in a state of permanent stand by, they are ready when the girls are!!! A bit like Stags coming into rut and elephants into mush I suppose
